Ask this question online and you get a forum thread from 2021, a retailer selling cable by the box, and a spread of figures so wide it is useless. The reason nobody names a price is not evasion. It is that the number is set by your building, and anybody quoting per drop sight unseen is guessing. So here is the honest version — what actually drives the cost, in enough detail that you can size up your own job and tell a real quote from a bad one.

The short answer

Everybody in this trade dodges this question, which is why the internet has filled the gap with guesswork. The number is genuinely building-dependent — but that does not mean you have to walk in blind. Knowing what moves it is more useful than a figure somebody made up.

There is no honest per-drop price

The number depends on your building far more than on anything a supplier sells. Two jobs with the same drop count, the same cable and the same jacks can differ by a multiple, because the work of getting a cable from one end of a building to the other is set by the building, not by the cable.

The published figures do not agree, and that is the evidence

Search this question and you get a forum thread, a retailer, a couple of contractors several states away, and a spread so wide it tells you nothing. That spread is not carelessness on their part. It is what happens when a price is quoted without a building attached to it.

Two quotes thousands apart are usually different jobs

When two numbers are far apart, the difference is almost never the same work priced differently. It is one quote including things the other left out. Read the scope side by side before you read the totals, and the gap usually explains itself.

Four things to check on any quote

Whether every run is tested and the results handed over. Whether the rack, the patch panel and cable management are in the number or bought separately. Whether drywall patching and paint are included or excluded. And whether the price is per drop or fixed against a defined scope — because per-drop pricing given without a walk-through is an estimate wearing a quote’s clothing.

Drop count

The count is the first thing anybody asks and the last thing that behaves the way people expect. The first drop is the expensive one. Getting a crew and a van to the building, establishing the pathway, mounting the rack, landing the patch panel and putting a tester on the job all happen once, and then get spread across however many runs are in the job. Ten drops does not cost ten times one drop. A single drop on its own is rarely cheap, because it is carrying all of that by itself.

Open walls or finished walls

This is the single biggest multiplier on the whole job, and it is the one people underestimate. A run through an open stud bay takes minutes; the same run in a finished building is a fishing job. Finished means tracing what is already in the wall, finding a path that exists, working an attic in a Georgia August or a crawlspace after rain, and opening drywall where there is genuinely no other way through. Then somebody has to patch and paint what was opened. Masonry, plaster, tile, balloon framing and fire blocking each add their own version of the same problem.

Run length and the path

Distance matters less than people expect, and pathway matters far more. A horizontal copper run is limited to a 100 meter channel — ninety meters of solid cable in the building plus the patch cords at each end. That limit is not a preference, it is what the cable is specified to do, and past it a link stops being reliable rather than merely slow. A building long enough to break it does not get longer cable; it gets fiber out to a second closet, which is a different job with a different number. Short of that, what drives cost is whether a usable path exists at all — conduit, a chase between floors, an accessible ceiling, or none of the above.

What terminates it

A cable is not finished until both ends land somewhere. Jacks and wall plates at the room end; a patch panel, a rack, cable management and power at the other. A bundle hanging out of a hole in the wall is not a termination point. Whether the rack and the panel are inside the number or bought separately is one of the most common reasons two quotes for the same building look nothing alike, and it is worth asking directly rather than inferring it from a line item.

Testing and documentation

This is the part that is invisible on a quote and the first thing cut by the cheapest bid in the stack. An untested run is a run nobody has confirmed works. A link light is not a test — a run can pass traffic today with a split pair, a stretched jacket or a marginal termination, and turn into an intermittent fault next spring, at which point somebody is paying to find it. Documentation is the same argument one step later: labels at both ends and a written schedule of what feeds what, so the next change does not begin with unplugging things to see what goes dark.

Travel and access

The honest version is that distance from Bremen is a real cost, and so is the time of day. Work that has to happen outside business hours costs more than work that does not. A church that cannot have a crew in the sanctuary on a Sunday, a business that cannot have its floor opened during trading, a house with a schedule around it — each of those turns the same drops into evenings, or into short visits either side of somebody else’s day. None of that is padding. It is the same work in a narrower window.

These are the questions that come after the numbers arrive and refuse to line up with each other.

Why will an installer not quote structured cabling over the phone?

Because the phone does not tell them what the job is. The cable itself is a small part of what a run costs — the labor to get that cable from one end of a building to the other is most of it, and that labor is set by the building. Same drop count, same cable, same jacks: one house has open framing and a walkable attic, the other has plaster over masonry, blown insulation and a finished basement ceiling. Those are not the same job and they should not carry the same number. An installer who quotes you per drop sight unseen is doing one of two things. Either the number is padded high enough to survive whatever they find, or it is guessed low and there is a conversation about change orders coming. Neither is better than somebody walking the building first.

Is it cheaper to run extra cable now than to add it later?

Almost always, and the reason is where the labor sits. Once a crew is in the building with the walls open and the pathway established, one more run alongside the ones already going in is mostly cable and a jack. Adding that same run in two years is a fresh trip, a fresh route, and — if the walls have closed — a fishing job with drywall repair behind it. That is why pre-wire checklists look generous: a spare drop at each end of the great room, one behind every television, one at each planned access point. The cable is not the expensive part. The second visit is. That said, extra does not mean unlimited. A drop nobody can name a purpose for still has to be terminated, tested, labeled and given a port on the panel, and that is real work.

Is Cat6a worth paying for as future-proofing?

Sometimes, and it depends on the run rather than on the building. Cat6a is specified to carry 10GBASE-T across the full 100 meter channel, where Cat6 is specified for 10 gigabit only over a shorter distance. If you have a specific reason to expect ten gigabit at the far end of a long run — a server, a NAS, a link between closets — that is a real argument. For a jack behind a television or an access point on a ceiling it is not, because nothing on the other end of that cable is asking for it. Cat6a is also thicker and stiffer, it takes more room in a pathway, and it is less forgiving around tight corners, so it is not a free upgrade even where the material difference is small. The version of future-proofing that pays off more reliably is pathway — conduit, sleeves and a service loop, so that the next cable can be pulled at all.

What is a suspiciously cheap cabling quote leaving out?

Usually testing, documentation and the termination point, in that order, because those are the three things a customer cannot see missing on the day. An untested run is a run nobody has confirmed works; it can light up and still have a split pair or a jacket that was stretched during the pull, which surfaces months later as a camera that keeps dropping or a device quietly negotiating down to a slower speed. Undocumented means nobody knows which jack is which port, so every future change starts with unplugging things to see what goes dark. And a bundle of cable hanging out of a hole in the wall is not a termination point — a patch panel, a rack and cable management are. After that, check who is patching and painting the drywall that has to be opened, and whether that sits inside the number or in a line of exclusions at the bottom.

Can the cable already in my building be reused?

Often, and it is worth finding out before anybody quotes replacing it. Plenty of buildings have Cat5e in the walls that is perfectly capable of a gigabit and has no reason to come out. What matters is whether the runs can be traced to both ends, whether they were terminated properly, whether they pass a test, and whether they land somewhere usable. The common failures are cable that was run but never terminated, cable terminated to a phone pinout, and cable that disappears into a wall with no record of where it comes out. Tracing and testing existing runs takes time and shows up on a quote as labor, but it is usually cheaper than pulling new cable, and it tells you what you actually have instead of what somebody assumed.
