Nearly every design we are called for is one of these three. The building is different every time. The order of the work is not: count it, draw it, then buy it.

01 / New construction

The design should existbefore the drywall does.

On a new build or a gut renovation, the network design is the cheapest line on the job and usually the first one skipped. Rack location, drop counts and access point positions get settled while changing them still costs an eraser.

WiFi, cameras, door access and AV all want the same wire and the same bandwidth. Designed together, they coexist. Added one at a time by three different companies, they interfere with each other and nobody owns the result.

Six decisionsMade in the right order.

Design is the cheap part and it is the part that gets skipped. Every one of these is a decision somebody makes whether or not they meant to — the only question is whether it was on purpose.

Requirements & load

A design starts with a count, not a catalog. Every access point, camera, TV, printer, thermostat, doorbell and rack-mounted box takes a port, an address and a share of the uplink. Nobody can size a network they have not counted.

Gateway & firewall

A UniFi gateway at the edge handling routing, firewalling and traffic policy, sized for the connection coming in and the load going out. It is also the piece that decides which network can talk to which, so it gets chosen after the segmentation plan rather than before it.

Managed PoE switching

Switching sized for what plugs into it, with PoE budget for the access points and cameras that are planned and the ones that arrive later. Managed, so a port can be assigned to a VLAN instead of trusting whatever gets plugged into it.

Access point placement

Access point locations chosen against the floor plan, the construction and the way the building is actually used — not spaced evenly because that looks tidy on a drawing. Brick, tile, foil-backed insulation and a stone chimney all count. Placement is modeled first and verified on site.

VLANs & segmentation

Guests, cameras, IoT devices, point of sale and the machines holding anything worth keeping do not belong on one flat network. Segmentation gets written first in plain English — who is allowed to reach what — and then configured to match that sentence.

Addressing & remote management

Addressing and DHCP laid out so the scheme still reads clearly in three years, remote management set up so a small change does not require a truck, and the whole design written down and handed to you.

Drawn before it is bought

Paper is the cheapest placeTo be wrong.

Every property gets drawn three ways before an order goes out — what connects, where the signal has to reach, and what ends up in the rack. Moving a line on a drawing costs nothing.

The topology

What connects to what, in what order, from the ISP handoff down to the last access point. One page that tells the next person how the building is put together.

Which network each device sits on and what it is permitted to reach — written in plain English before it is written into a gateway.

Addressing & credentials

The address scheme, the DHCP ranges and the administrator accounts. They are yours. You are not renting access to your own network.

What went in, what was reused, and what was deliberately left for later. The next change starts from a record instead of a guess.

Our lane

The network itself — gateway and firewall, managed PoE switching, access points, VLANs and addressing, plus the cameras, door access and AV that ride on it. Designed, installed and documented.

Not our lane

Desktop and server support, email and software problems, and line-voltage electrical work. We design the road, not the computers driving on it — and we coordinate with whoever handles those.

Usually by somebody who has already bought equipment once, and would rather not do it a second time.

Do I need a UniFi system, or is a better router enough?

If one router covers your building and nothing about it frustrates you, a better router is enough and we will say so. UniFi earns its place once a property needs more than one access point, or has cameras and door access sharing the same wire, or has people on it who should not be able to reach everything. That is a design question, and the free assessment answers it before anybody spends money.

Can you install UniFi equipment I already bought?

Yes. Bring what you have to the assessment and we will tell you what fits the design and what does not. We would rather configure a gateway you already own than sell you a second one. If a piece is genuinely wrong for the building, you get the reason, not just the verdict.

What is a VLAN, and do I need one at home?

A VLAN is a way of running several separate networks over the same wire. Guest WiFi, cameras, thermostats and the computer holding your business records are all on the property, and they do not need to see one another. In a house it matters most for cameras and smart devices, which are the two things most likely to be the weak point.

How much does network design cost?

It depends on the size of the property, how many things connect to it, whether the walls are open, and how much of what is installed can be reused. Design is the cheapest part of the job and it decides everything after it. The free assessment comes first and a written quote follows it — nothing gets priced over the phone before somebody has seen the building.

Do we have to replace everything at once?

No. A design is worth having even if it gets installed over two years. We write down the whole system, then stage it so each purchase still fits at the end. What that avoids is the usual pattern, where every fix is bought in an emergency and none of the pieces were ever meant to work together.
