Cameras and doors are the visible half. The other half is the network they hang on and the paperwork that says who owns what at the end — which is the half that gets skipped.

Selection & placement

A camera sees what it is pointed at and nothing else. Positions are walked on site — drive, doors, corridor, dock — and each one gets the body that suits it: bullet, turret or dome. Coverage is decided by where a person actually walks, not by how many cameras fit in a quote.

Recorded on site

Video surveillance records to a UniFi Protect recorder in your building, on your network. There is no monthly subscription and no cloud storage plan. Storage is sized during design around how many cameras there are and how far back you want to be able to look.

Doors, hardware & credentials

UniFi Access readers on the doors that matter, with keycard entry, a phone credential or a keypad code depending on who is coming through. An access-controlled door still has to meet fire-egress requirements — free egress from the inside is confirmed with the authority having jurisdiction, never assumed.

A VLAN of their own

Cameras and door controllers sit on their own VLAN, away from the computers, the guest WiFi and the family iPads. A camera is a small computer hanging on the outside of a building. It does not need to reach anything else on the network, so it is not allowed to.

One app, cameras and doors

Live view, recorded footage, door unlock and the rest of the network in the same app, on one login. Roles set who sees what, so the front desk is not looking at the same screen the owner is.

Accounts handed over

Administrator accounts are created in your name and handed to you in writing at the end of the job. You own the equipment, the footage and the login. If you use somebody else next year, you are not locked out of your own building.

Positions, doors and cable routes are settled on paper and then walked on site. Moving a camera on a drawing is free. Moving one on a soffit means a second hole and a second patch.

Camera plan

Four positions drawn on the footprint with the body each one takes — turret, dome or bullet — their cones overlapping across the drive and the approach, and one area at the rear left uncovered on purpose.

Camera & reader drops

Where every camera and every door reader lands, and where the cable runs back to. One cable per device, home run to the same place as everything else.

Access opening

One controlled door with each part called out — the reader outside, the electric strike in the jamb, the door position sensor at the head, request to exit on the inside face and one PoE run back to the rack — and free egress marked, because the door still has to open from the inside.

What you keep

A subscription can end.Ownership does not.

On a monthly plan you are renting access to a recording of your own building, on terms somebody else sets and can change. Recording on site settles that question before it comes up: the cameras are yours, the footage is yours, and the account is in your name.

Not our lane

We are not an alarm company. There is no central station behind this, nobody is watching a monitor for you, and no one gets dispatched at two in the morning. Line-voltage electrical and the lock hardware itself are coordinated with the trades that carry them, and fire-egress requirements on any access-controlled door are settled with the fire marshal.

Do UniFi security cameras require a monthly subscription?

No. The cameras record to a UniFi Protect recorder in your building, and looking at them — on site or from your phone — carries no monthly fee. That is the real difference between this and the systems sold door to door. With a subscription you are renting access to footage of your own property, and the day you stop paying you stop having it. Here the cameras, the recorder and the recordings are yours from the day they go in.

Do you monitor the cameras or respond to alarms?

No, and we will not imply otherwise. CDM designs, installs, configures and hands over the system. We are not an alarm company, there is no central station behind this, and nobody is watching a screen on your behalf. What you get is a system you watch yourself, from the app, with notifications that come to you. If you want monitoring and dispatch, that is a separate service from a licensed alarm company, and we will tell you so rather than sell around it.

How long is footage kept, and where is it stored?

It is stored on the recorder in your building, not in someone else’s data center. How far back it reaches depends on how many cameras there are, what each one is set to record, and how much storage goes in the recorder — so the system is designed backwards from the answer you want. Tell us how far back you need to be able to look and it gets sized for that. Anyone quoting you a retention figure before they have counted your cameras is guessing.

Does door access control still work if the internet goes down?

The door controller and the recorder are in your building rather than in a data center somewhere, so credentials keep being checked on the local network and the cameras keep recording when the line drops. What you lose until it comes back is remote viewing and phone notifications. Worth saying plainly alongside that: an access-controlled door still has to allow free egress from the inside, and that requirement is settled with the fire marshal on every job rather than designed around.

What does a security camera and access control system cost?

It depends on how many doors are being controlled, how many camera positions the property needs, whether there is already cable in the walls, and what hardware each door takes — a finished building with no pathways costs more to wire than an open one. We will not put a figure on it over the phone. The free network assessment comes first: we walk the property, agree the positions and the doors, and a written quote follows. What is not in that quote is a monthly bill.
