01 / Before drywall

The cheapest dayto do this right.

Every drop is trivial while the studs are open and nearly impossible once they are not. This is the one stage where a decision is still free.

Coverage designed against the actual footprint and the actual construction. Brick, stone, plaster, spray foam and radiant barrier all eat signal — which is exactly why the mesh kit that worked in the last house does not work in this one.

What homeowners askBefore we walk the house.

Most of it comes down to three things: when to start, what the coverage will actually reach, and who owns the system afterward.

When in a build should the low-voltage contractor be brought in?

At the plan stage if the plans exist, and at framing at the latest. Every drop is trivial while the studs are open and awkward once they are not, so the window before insulation and drywall is the one that matters. Coming in early also settles the decisions that are hard to undo: where the rack lives, where the internet line enters the house, and which sleeves get left behind for whatever the house needs in five years. Adding locations to a drawing costs nothing. Adding one to a finished wall costs a weekend.

Does a large house really need more than a mesh system?

In a house of that size, usually yes. A mesh kit is built for an apartment or a modest single-story home, and it is not failing because it is defective — it is failing because it is being asked to do something it was never designed for. Each mesh node relays over the air using the same radio it is serving your devices with, so every hop is paid for in throughput, and brick, stone, plaster, spray foam and a radiant barrier take a bite out of whatever is left. Access points fed by cable do not have that problem. The real test is not whether the mesh reaches the far bedroom. It is whether that bedroom is still usable when the whole family is home.

Can coverage reach the shop, the barn or the pool house?

Usually, and the version that works properly runs a cable out to the building with an access point at the far end of it. That gives the outbuilding its own coverage instead of the last thin edge of the house signal, and it means a camera or a door out there has something reliable to sit on. Whether the run is practical comes down to the distance, what is between the two structures, and whether any path already exists. Where the ground makes a cable impractical, there are wireless options between buildings, and we will tell you plainly which of the two you are getting and what it gives up.

Do the cameras require a monthly subscription?

No. UniFi Protect cameras record to a recorder on site, in your house, and the footage is yours. There is no monthly fee to keep recording and no fee to look at the cameras from your phone. That is the main reason we build them this way instead of on a consumer camera platform, where the recording lives on somebody else’s server and stops the month a payment lapses. Storage is a one-time part of the build, sized to how many cameras there are and how far back you want to be able to look.

What happens at handover?

You get the system, the documentation and the logins. The rack is labeled at both ends, you get a map of what is plugged into what and what stops working if a given piece fails, and the admin accounts are in your name and handed over in writing rather than kept by the installer. Then we spend about half an hour with whoever actually runs the house on the handful of things worth knowing — how to put a guest on the guest network, where the cameras are recording, and what to check before calling anybody. We would rather you call us because you want to than because you have to.
