We walk the property before we quote it — the floor plan, the construction, the levels, and the parts of it people actually use. Dead zones are a design problem, not a hardware problem. Buying a bigger router at the same bad location fixes nothing.

Placement & mounting

Access points go on ceilings and high on walls where the coverage has to be, mounted flush and fed from behind so nothing is dangling. Outdoors they go under eaves and soffits in outdoor-rated housings. Where the room will not tolerate a visible unit, we say so before it is mounted rather than after.

Wired backhaul & PoE

Every access point gets its own cable back to the switch and takes power over that same cable. This is the whole difference between a designed system and a mesh: a mesh node repeats over the air using the same radio it is serving clients with, so the coverage it buys is paid for in throughput. Mesh is not a scam. It is a workaround for not having a cable. Where a cable can reach, the cable wins.

Bands & channels

The 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands do different jobs and reach different distances, and the networks next door are already using some of them. Channels and widths get chosen for the building rather than left on the factory setting — a wider channel is not automatically a faster one in a crowded room.

Roaming & handoff

One network name across the whole property, with the access points cooperating so a phone walking from the kitchen to the patio is handed off instead of clinging to the first one it found. Most complaints about a slow phone in a good coverage area are really a device that never let go.

Cellular failover

A 5G cellular gateway sits behind the firewall and takes over when the ISP drops, so the cameras, the doors, the card reader and the service keep running. It is a backup line, not a second full-speed connection — the point is that the building stays up until the line comes back.

Not our lane

We are not your internet provider and we cannot make a slow connection faster. WiFi is the last part of the trip, not the line coming into the building. Line-voltage electrical work and the patching after a retrofit go to the trades that do them.

Why is my WiFi slow in one room?

Almost always because the signal has to get through the building to reach you and it is arriving thin, or because your phone is still holding onto an access point two rooms away. Distance is only part of it — brick, plaster, foil-backed insulation, tile, a stone fireplace and a metal roof all take a bite out of it. A stronger router in the same place does not solve it. Coverage in that room does.

Is a mesh system as good as wired access points?

No, and it is worth being precise about why. Mesh is not a scam — it is a sensible workaround for not having a cable. But every hop a mesh node makes uses the same radio it is serving your devices with, so the coverage you gain is paid for in throughput, and a node placed one hop too far pays for it twice. A wired access point does not have that problem because its connection back to the switch is a cable. Where a cable can be run, we run it. Where one genuinely cannot — an old detached shop with no path to it — a mesh node is the honest answer, and we will tell you that is what it is.

How many access points does a building need?

It depends on the footprint, the construction, the layout and how many people are on it at once, and anyone quoting a number over the phone is guessing. That count is also most of what drives the price, along with how much cable already exists and whether outdoor coverage and failover are in scope. We walk the property, plan the coverage, and a written quote follows the free assessment.

Can I get WiFi out to a detached shop, barn or pool house?

Usually, and the good version of it runs on a cable out to the building with an access point at the far end. That gives the shop real coverage instead of the last weak edge of the house signal. Whether the run is practical depends on the distance and what is between the two buildings, which is one of the things we look at during the assessment.

What happens to the WiFi when the internet goes out?

The WiFi itself keeps running — the network inside the building does not depend on the ISP. What stops is anything that has to reach the outside world, which on most properties now means the cameras you check from your phone, the doors, the thermostats and the card reader. A 5G cellular gateway takes over the outside connection when the line drops so those keep working until it comes back. It is a backup, not a replacement, and it is sized for that.
